Redwood City is gearing up for a Día de los Muertos celebration at Courthouse Square on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024.
The event, organized by Casa Círculo Cultural, the San Mateo County History Museum, and the Redwood City Parks & Arts Foundation, will honor ancestors and celebrate life with music, dancing, art, and food.
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican tradition celebrated on November 1 and 2 to remember loved ones who have died. Families often visit cemeteries, clean graves, and set up altars—called ofrendas—with photos, candles, marigolds, and favorite foods of those they’re honoring. It’s a colorful celebration that blends remembrance with a joyful celebration of life.
In Redwood City, the celebration will bring the community together with live music, dancers, and a procession through downtown. The square will be decorated with sugar skulls, marigolds, and dozens of altars, and visitors can explore exhibits inside the San Mateo County History Museum.
The event runs from 3:30 to 8 p.m. It’s free, family-friendly, and a great way to experience this rich cultural tradition. There’s also an altar contest with prizes for creativity. For more info or to enter the contest, check out Casa Círculo Cultural’s website.
