S&C Culinary is bringing back its popular Tamalada event for the third year on Dec. 7, with two sessions at the Highlands Community Club in Redwood City. A tamalada, rooted in Latin American tradition, is a lively gathering where family, friends, and neighbors come together to make tamales, chat, and connect.
The event, led by the renowned Chef Steve Cortez, will kick off with an introduction to tamales, covering their history, variations across Latin America, and essential steaming methods. Participants will get hands-on experience making tamale masa and learn different techniques for rolling, folding, and steaming tamales. Cortez will demonstrate various cookware and offer vegan filling options alongside the traditional pork and chicken.

Each session includes a sit-down tasting and take-home tamales, as well as a recipe guide. Attendees can choose between a morning session (10 a.m. to noon) and an afternoon session (1 p.m. to 3 p.m.), with tickets priced at $79 each on Eventbrite. Additional fees are not included.
Cortez, a San Francisco native with roots in both Asian and Latino cultures, brings a unique culinary perspective shaped by his travels to over 90 countries and experience working with top chefs. He has also been featured in Bay Area media and regularly teaches in Redwood City and beyond.
For those looking to enjoy an interactive culinary experience, the Tamalada is a perfect way to celebrate the season.
