This weekend brings all kinds of musical and festive fun, from concerts with flutist Ráyo Furuta and pianist Hiroko Mizuno, Bluegrass Rubber Band and Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, plus a community jazz jam; an annual holiday Lego show marks its 20th anniversary; Stanford’s art department holds open studios, plus a holiday market in Mountain View.
Ráyo Furuta and Hiroko Mizuno
Flutist Ráyo Furuta and pianist Hiroko Mizuno join forces for a free community concert for the Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA), titled “Songs Without Words.” The performance showcases Furuta’s arrangements of selections including art song, lieder, arias and popular music. Furuta, who was called “The Rockstar of the Flute” by the Informador de Guadalajara, explores styles including classical, pop and jazz, and is also a professor of music at San Jose State and Santa Clara universities and the executive artistic director of Chamber Music Silicon Valley. Mizuno earned her degree from Japan’s Toho Gakuen Conservatory and has released several recordings, according to CSMA.

Stanford’s Fall 2024 Open Studios
Stanford University’s Department of Art & Art History opens its classroom and studio doors to the community to share the work of undergraduate students, including in the media of drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, video and more. This long-running tradition takes place on the last afternoon of classes during the fall and winter quarters and gives visitors the chance to see students’ work right where it was created.

Jazz Commons
The first weekend of each month, Little Green hosts Jazz Commons – an evening of community jazz jamming featuring local jazz musicians. The Dec. 7 lineup features Isaac Stevenson, Kimiko, Chris Cortez, and Jeff Saxton and a holiday theme, according to an Instagram post.

BayLUG Holiday Show
From a whimsical gingerbread town to sprawling cityscapes, the annual BayLUG Holiday Show features it all, built brick by brick, in Lego. This weekend, the Bay Area LEGO User Group and BayLTC, the Bay Area L-Gauge Train Club, open their 20th annual holiday display of miniature scenes and electric trains built from Lego bricks. Club members build a variety of individual scenes for the event. They also contribute to a large collaborative themed display. The theme for this year’s collaborative piece is “Once Upon a Time.”

Bluegrass Rubber Band
“Local traditional handmade bluegrass” from Bluegrass Rubber Band is on the agenda for the next edition of 2nd Story at Red Rock Coffee, which showcases independent musicians in the cafe’s upstairs space. First floor cafe service ends at 8 p.m.

North Star Market
The Ameswell Hotel hosts a market offering handmade crafts by local artisans, festive food and drink, and wintry activities including the chance to take family photos with Santa Claus.

PACO’s Holiday Extravaganza
Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra (PACO) is celebrating the season with a holiday show featuring all five of its ensembles and conducted by music director Scott Krijnen, plus headliner violin soloist Ariana Kim playing with the group for a performance of “Four Seasons of Buenos Aires” by Piazzolla. Kim, a professor at Cornell University, earned a 2019 Grammy nomination for the album “Blueprinting.” PACO is a long-running program for youth string musicians. A pre-concert reception starts at 1:45 p.m.
