Success can be defined in many ways. Some see becoming wealthy as success. Others view accomplishments as success. Still, others consider fame as another definition of success.

Yet, untold numbers of people throughout the world have not become wealthy or famous yet have left their mark due to personal circumstances that came upon them unintentionally. As a result, their accomplishments have benefitted others. This is a quieter form of success but noteworthy nonetheless.

One such person is Janis Baker Ferre.

Originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, Ferre came to the Bay Area and attended Sequoia High School, where she graduated in 1965.

She returned to her native Utah after graduation and attended Brigham Young University.

Like so many others, Ferre started a family life.

Her second son was born prematurely. She was unable to get to the hospital in time for a normal birth. As a result, there were problems. He was ill and developmentally delayed. Eventually, it was determined he was also deaf.

To secure needed help for her disabled son, Ferre discovered there was an overwhelming need to help children with disabilities.

She buckled down and decided to leave no stone unturned to help her disabled son.

She started out as one mother attempting to help her son. However, her efforts continued to grow. Soon, others began to take note of her tireless efforts. Her commitment to helping her own son ended up becoming a crusade to help others who were disabled.

Janis’s efforts became well-known throughout the entire state of Utah. Over the years, her unwavering efforts have resulted in securing millions of dollars in critical funding for projects that benefit the disabled, as well as numerous laws being enacted with similar benefits.

Today she remains actively involved with the Utah Legislative Coalition for Children With Disabilities.

Well done Janis, you do indeed define success!
