In the course of the modern rock era, there exist some significant dates which bear recollection Let’s take a look…..
#1 of 4: August 28, 1964
This date is likely one that very few, if any, might recall and possibly not assign much significance to. However, allow me to make the case.
The Beatles were touring the US. They had turned the entertainment world upside down and captured the imagination of young people everywhere. The tour included a New York stop where they played Forest Hills Stadium. They bunked at the Delmonico Hotel, now called Trump Park.
When major stars are in town, it’s not unusual for other stars to visit them. Such was the case on this date when Bob Dylan came calling. He arrived bearing ‘gifts’ in the form of marijuana. According to their road manager, Mal Evans, it was not a casual experience for Paul McCartney, who felt he had discovered the meaning of life after getting high. Everyone had a very enjoyable evening. As for Dylan, “He was our idol,” McCartney recalled.
After the ‘grass soaked’ encounter with Dylan, the Beatles would be forever changed. They began to move in a different direction creatively. This was quite apparent when their next album – Rubber Soul, was released.
Their talent had not diminished; however, their inner perspective had evolved. As they continued smoking grass, they became more introspective, and their overall view of life shifted.
In hindsight, it became clear that the evening with Dylan marked a significant turning point for them. Going forward, their creativity expanded dramatically, inspiring them to experiment, which included more psychedelic sounds and lyrics. The Beatles had been transformed, and we were all blessed with some of their most poignant and memorable material, which history confirms.
I believe it’s safe to say that Dylan’s influence on them helped shape their influence on cultural norms that emerged from that hot August night in New York.
