Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Redwood City native Don Bunce was the quarterback for the Woodside Wildcats for two years, leading the team to an undefeated season in 1966. That year, he was also named the league’s Most Valuable Player. Additionally, he was voted the Peninsula’s Athlete of the Year.

In addition to his talent in football, he has twice lettered in varsity basketball and has been a talented baseball player in several positions for three seasons. Bunce pushed himself and everyone he played with to be better. Thus, he became an inspiration for those around him. Nothing was routine for him. He was one of the most intense players imaginable.

Aside from being a great athlete, he excelled academically. Thus, he was rewarded by being accepted at the prestigious Stanford University, which admittedly may have had something to do with his athletic skills.

If there was anyone who led by example, it was Bunce. He worked harder than all the other players.

There are many ways to lead others. Don led by example. He was arguably the hardest-working player at every practice in every sport he played, setting a great example for all those around him. He was attentive to all the details of preparing for a game and was undoubtedly as cerebral a talent as he was athletic. He was also elected class and school officer at various times during his Woodside years.
