The date of December 25 is renown world over, largely because it is the traditional observance of the date Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem. (Many believers, especially Messianics, refer to him as Yeshua.) In recent years, the subject of his date of birth has become a topic of discussion. However, we are not here to debate said point in this writing.

Throughout the millennium, numerous other events have occurred on this date. Some are more important than others. However, we are not attempting to offer reasons why. We simply wish to provide a list of notables and leave it to you to determine their value.

  • 1066 William the Conqueror crowned King of England
  • 1776 George Washington crosses the Delaware River for the Battle of Trenton
  • 1914 Christmas truce during WWI
  • 1991 Mikhail Gorbachev resigned

  • 336 The first recorded celebration of Christmas took place in Rome
  • 1223 St Francis of Assisi creates the first nativity scene
  • 1492 Columbus’s ship Santa Maria runs aground in Puerto de la Navidad
  • 1941 Bing Crosby debuts the song “White Christmas”
  • 1962 The film “To Kill a Mocking Bird” is released

Space Exploration:

  • 1968 Apollo 8 becomes the first manned mission to orbit the moon and broadcast back to Earth
  • 1758 Haley’s Comet is sighted
