Seinfeld was a TV comedy series that aired on NBC from 1989 to 1998. The main star was Jerry Seinfeld, who played a fictional version of himself, and the interactions with his neighbors. Larry David, along with Seinfeld himself, was a co-founder of the show.

The show was one of the most popular in the ratings, having been among the top three in the ratings for five of its seasons, two of which it was ranked No. 1.

Here are some of the quirky aspects of the show that you may not have known:

  • Jerry Seinfeld did not wear the shoes provided by the costume designer. He insisted on wearing his own personal shoes.
  • Julie Louis-Dreyfus was pregnant during season 3. The crew hid her from showing by casting her in baggy clothes.
  • Jason Alexander based his character’s neurotic nature on Woody Allen. He often argued with writers regarding his character’s bad decisions.
  • Michael Richards (Cosmo Kramer) rehearsed every physical bit extensively, and once injured his back sliding into Jerry’s apartment. He also refused to socialize with the cast off set. He believed it would weaken their onscreen chemistry.
  • The name “Elaine” was inspired by an ex-girlfriend of program co-creator Larry David.
  • Jason Alexander nearly quit the show in season 3 after learning the writers removed his character (George) from an episode without informing him.
  • Wayne Knight, who played Neuman, was cast after producers saw his sweaty performance in the film “Basic Instinct.”
  • The entire cast was banned from ad-libbing during tapings because the timing of the jokes needed to be practiced in front of a live audience, and for taping purposes.
  • Kramer’s character was based on co-founder Larry David’s real-life neighbor, who later attempted to sue the show for using his likeness.
