Monterra Credit Union awarded $31,000 in scholarships this month to help Bay Area students cover the rising cost of college, including a $4,000 award to Redwood City student Anika Keshavan.

Keshavan plans to major in business administration at UC Berkeley, where she hopes to develop leadership skills and apply business knowledge to benefit her community.

ā€œI am so grateful to the Monterra Credit Union for providing me with this scholarship,ā€ Keshavan said, adding that it will help her pursue her educational and professional goals.

The Redwood City-based credit union awarded $16,000 through its 2026 Educational Scholarship program to seven students from Fremont, Hayward, San Francisco, Redwood City, Menlo Park and Burlingame.

Monterra also gave $15,000 to the San Mateo County Community College Foundation to support $2,500 scholarships for two students at each of the San Mateo County Community College District’s three campuses: CaƱada College, College of San Mateo and Skyline College.

The scholarships can be used for tuition, housing, textbooks, meal plans and other higher education expenses.

Monterra has supported access to higher education since 2008. Educational Scholarship recipients are selected based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities and essay submissions. Applicants may also choose to address financial need in their essays.

Students need a minimum 3.0 GPA, an official transcript and an essay describing how their community has shaped them and the impact they hope to make.

Scholarship applications are accepted from students living in San Mateo, Santa Clara, San Francisco, Contra Costa and Alameda counties. Monterra Credit Union members are automatically eligible to apply.

The next application period is expected to run from January to May 2027.
