The Redwood City Council will discuss the Fiscal Year 2024-25 Recommended Budget at its meeting on Monday, and it is expected to be adopted on June 24, 2024.

According to the city, the proposal includes both operating and capital budgets and emphasizes the city’s commitment to financial responsibility and community priorities.

City Manager Melissa Stevenson Diaz said the city is “supporting community needs while tackling our structural budget deficit.”

“The Recommended Budget reflects a careful balance between ensuring essential services and addressing our financial realities,” she added.

Diaz also said the city needs increased ongoing revenue to maintain valued community services and warned that without new revenues, future service reductions may be necessary.

The budget includes over $7 million in special one-time allocations and focuses on resident-identified priorities such as infrastructure projects, including road repairs, sidewalk maintenance, and storm drain improvements. It also ensures the continued funding of public safety services, maintaining staffing levels for firefighters, paramedics, and police officers. Additionally, it preserves essential community programs, including after-school and recreation programs, and maintains library services.

According to a news release, the city faces annual deficits of approximately $9.3 million, a challenge shared by many California and Bay Area cities.

In November 2023, the City Council began exploring a revenue measure, focusing on potential reform to the City’s Business License Tax.
