A Redwood City Mathnasium tutor, who pleaded no contest to a felony charge involving a 17-year-old coworker, has been sentenced to one year in county jail after he allegedly attempted to meet her to engage in sexual activity, the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office said.

The sentence comes after several felonies and enhancements were dropped in exchange for Redwood City resident Pouya Asrar, 37, pleading no contest to felony meeting a minor for lewd purposes.

While Asar faced a maximum sentence of two years in state prison, Judge Kevin Dunleavy sentenced him to one year in county jail and two years of supervised probation. While he was sentenced to one year in jail, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said he will likely serve only half of that term due to good-behavior credit.

Dunleavy felt that since Asar had shown remorse and it was his first offense, one year was an appropriate sentence, Wagstaffe said.  The District Attorney’s Office asked the judge to sentence him to the maximum. Asar’s wife asked the court for leniency and said she had forgiven Asar, prosecutors said.

When determining what to charge an individual with, Wagstaffe said the District Attorney’s Office considers the sentencing range and the charge that most accurately reflects the conduct.

Dunleavy also delayed jail time until Jan. 26, 2026, so he could spend time with his family.

Upon release, Asar will have to register as a sex offender, abstain from pornography, alcohol and drugs, relinquish any firearms or body armor, and stay away from areas where children congregate.
