After six months of investigation, Redwood City police said Thursday they tracked down a 23-year-old man suspected of firing several rounds outside an apartment building over the New Year’s holiday.

The shooting was reported about 12:20 a.m. on Jan. 1, when a man allegedly shot a firearm numerous times outside a building in the 500 block of Stambaugh Street in Redwood City.

Several residents, including children, were in the area when the shots were fired, according to police.

It’s nearly impossible to identify those who fire off weapons during the New Year’s holiday, police said, but after six months the department’s street crime suppression team developed information that led to the man’s arrest.

When they searched his home, detectives allegedly found a .45-caliber handgun, .45-caliber and 9mm ammunition, along with firearm accessories. A records check revealed the gun wasn’t registered to the man or anyone he knew.

In addition, police allegedly found a fake California identification card with the man’s digital image but with the name of a real person whom he did not know.

The man was arrested on suspicion of unlawful discharge of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm in public, and possession of false ID, and booked into the San Mateo County main jail.
