An employee at a business in Redwood City used a firearm to fend off an attempted robbery earlier this week but then accidentally shot himself in the leg afterward, police said.

At about 6 p.m. Wednesday, four suspects armed with a sledgehammer entered a business in the 800 block of Woodside Road in an attempt to smash display cases and steal items, but the employee armed himself with a legally owned firearm and confronted them, causing the suspects to flee in a vehicle, according to Redwood City police.

About an hour later, the employee was moving items when the gun discharged while in his pants pocket and the bullet struck his leg. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries, which are not considered life-threatening, police said.

The four suspects remain at large. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Redwood City police at (650) 780-7100.
