Redwood City police arrested a 19-year-old San Bruno man on Wednesday, April 16, on suspicion of committing robbery at Sequoia Station the previous day.
Redwood City police officers were dispatched to the shopping center just before 6 p.m. on Tuesday after a shoplifting suspect displayed a firearm when security personnel tried to detain him, according to a police department press release.
The suspect fled prior to the arrival of police officers, who were unable to locate him, the release said. Using surveillance footage, law enforcement obtained a photo of the suspect.
Around 3 p.m. the following day, a Redwood City police officer was responding to an unrelated call for service near Woodside Road and Broadway when the officer saw a person who matched the suspect’s description and photo, police said.
“The officer called for assistance and formulated a plan to safely contact the subject,” the release said. “Once the subject was safely detained, the officer developed probable cause to arrest the subject for the armed robbery.”
Officers discovered a loaded handgun in the man’s jacket pocket, police said.
The suspect has been booked into Maguire Correctional Facility on a charge of felony second degree robbery, felony weapons charges and misdemeanor drug possession charges, according to jail records.
Police ask anyone with more information about this incident to contact Detective Erik Otterson at 650-780-7100.
