Police in San Mateo told residents this week that local high school seniors may be taking part in a game known as “Senior Assassin,” which involves participants using water guns or toy blasters that can resemble real firearms and may prompt emergency responses.
In an advisory Wednesday, the San Mateo Police Department said the activity, often played near graduation season, involves students attempting to “eliminate” one another with replica-style toy weapons. Officers warned that the items can appear real from a distance or in low-light conditions, potentially alarming the public and triggering calls to police.
Students were urged not to play the game in public places, near roadways or on private property without permission, and asked participants not to carry or display items that could be mistaken for real weapons.
Police also encouraged parents and guardians to talk with students about the risks and possible consequences of the activity.
Community members should report suspicious behavior, police said, while noting the game may be occurring in the area. Residents are advised to call 911 in emergencies and use the department’s non-emergency line at (650) 522-7700.
