The San Mateo County Community College District has introduced a plan to tackle $818 million in infrastructure and maintenance needs over the next decade.

Chancellor Melissa Moreno said the district will focus on transparency and accountability by creating an internal audit team and using federal “Green Book” standards to guide oversight.

“…As stewards of the public trust, we are obligated to you and our community to make sure our work has integrity and propriety,” Moreno said in a statement on the college district’s website.

Moreno said the college district identified $818 million in infrastructure and maintenance needs through a yearlong analysis. The total includes $595 million for capital improvements and $223 million for scheduled maintenance over the next decade, covering projects to modernize campus buildings and ensure they meet student safety and functionality standards.

The district has set aside $55 million to cover immediate needs while looking at private funding for future projects.

“Public financing is always a last resort,” Moreno said, referring to the district’s public financing philosophy.

Moreno added that the district aims to fund improvements on its own eventually.

Moreno promised to keep the community informed throughout the process.
