Incumbents seeking board reelection in the Belmont-Redwood Shores and Redwood City school districts have an easy path to another term as they face no challengers in the Nov. 3 elections.
The only contested race in either district looks to be for Trustee Area 1 in Belmont-Redwood Shores, which is moving away from at-large voting.
Newcomers Tzuhua “Tony” Hung and Charles Shagong filed to run for Area 1, which represents the northwest parts of Belmont.
Belmont-Redwood Shores board President David Koss is running unopposed for Area 3. That seat represents neighborhoods from the northwest corner of Redwood Shores to Old County Road in Belmont.
Area 5 in Belmont’s southwest is also up for election, but no one filed for that seat. The board is expected to fill that vacancy by appointment, Koss said in an email to the Pulse.
“Area 5 is one of the five trustee areas created when the district transitioned from at-large to by-trustee area elections,” Koss said. “After this election, the transition will be complete.”
Previously, Belmont-Redwood Shores voters chose trustees from throughout the district. “Under the new system, each trustee must reside within their designated trustee area and is elected by the voters in that area,” Koss said.
The board in 2023 approved the switch in response to the California Voting Rights Act of 2001, which sought to strengthen minority elected representation in local government.
In the Redwood City district, incumbents David Weekly and Cecilia Marquez face no opposition for their respective seats. Weekly is currently board president.
Meanwhile, both districts have new top leadership.
Belmont-Redwood Shores named Craig Goldman as interim superintendent while continuing its search for a long-term head. The district is expected to announce its next permanent superintendent by late September.
Belmont-Redwood Shores’ previous superintendent, Dan Deguara, took the same leadership position at Los Gatos Union.
Redwood City’s new superintendent is Christian Rubalcaba, who took over for the retired John Baker.
