Good morning, Redwood City,
Sheriff oversight
After more than eight hours of public commentary, presentations and discussion, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors took steps to advance civilian oversight of the Sheriff's Office. During a study session where 38 community speakers spoke in favor of oversight, the Board issued guidance for further research on the matter. The plans include forming a nine-member advisory body and a permanent Public Safety & Justice standing subcommittee. But, the advisory body will not have subpoena power, and hiring an Inspector General is still under consideration. We'll have more on this story later.
"Mezesville"
Don't forget to catch our story on Simon Monserrate Mezes, who tried to establish a town using his own name. Had it not been for a band of rebellious land squatters in the mid-1800s, Redwood City could have permanently been called "Mezesville," the name originally designated for the early settlement.
Salary increases
We got a lot of comments from you yesterday about the council's decision to increase the top earners' salaries.
Sally said, "Exactly what did they do for the city and people in Redwood City?" Gloria said she'd like to see a list of their accomplishments. Meanwhile, another resident was shocked to hear the city manager and city attorney even made that much and was not happy with the interactions they've had with them. Beverly hoped the two lived in the city and believed that compensating an employee so generously to ensure their future with the city was misguided. What do you think? Email us at editor@rwcpulse.com
Thanks to one of our readers for their spooky photo. Have a photo to share? Send it to us at editor@rwcpulse.com.
