Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Good morning Redwood City,

It's Friday. We made it to the end of the week! In just a few more hours, it will be time to wrap things up at the office and get into your weekend sweatpants.

But wait … Before you go sit on the couch and spend the next few days catching up on Squid Game, make sure you take the opportunity to read up on the Redwood City Redistricting process. I'm sure you've seen or heard someone mention it to you already, but if for some reason you haven't, go to the city's website or read our refresher here right now!

Why does redistricting matter, though?

Because redistricting is already happening and it's happening fast. By the end of the year, city officials plan to have some idea of what Redwood City's seven districts will look like. And those district lines or the district borders – this is where you come in – might have to be completely changed or redrawn, meaning that the district you thought you lived in might not be the district you will end up in when this is done. And that could have a significant impact on your neighborhood and what it might look like in the years to come.

Two years ago, Redwood City went from being an at-large election system to a district-based election system. In the November 2020 election, voters chose their council members by district. And guess what else happened in 2020? The U.S. Census, which happens every 10 years and helps municipalities ensure an equal number of residents end up in each district. And depending on where you live, how old you are, whether you have kids in schools, are a college student near campus, or even if you own a dog, you could have real power in determining which district you end up in.

Oh and if you think that redistricting doesn't affect you because you're in unincorporated Redwood City, try again. Redistricting is happening at every government level, including San Mateo County

So do you want to be a part of this redistricting process and help draw the boundary lines or do you want to let others decide where you'll end up? I know what I'm doing. Want more information? Call your council member or just hit reply.

I hope you guys have a great weekend and let me know what you plan to do after you read up on redistricting.

Signing off,

Michelle
