Jack Kern had a night to remember in Sequoia's 53-0 win over visiting Woodside on a cool, breezy evening at Terremere Field. Kern had three touchdown receptions in the first half and added two interception returns for scores in the second half, as Sequoia retained possession of The Log, given to the winner of this rivalry game.

Sequoia quarterback John Larios completed just three passes, but they were keepers — TD tosses of 72, 55 and 33 yards to Kern. It was the first game back for Larios, who incurred a shoulder injury early in the year, but returned to practice two weeks ago.

"That was the key," Sequoia coach Rob Poulos said. "Larios cleared two weeks ago. If it was this week, he wouldn't have played. We had to make sure it was safe for him to be out there. It's fun when it looks like how you draw it up. Sometimes, it doesn't."

Kern had back-to-back pick-sixes in the third quarter — one for 30 yards, the next one for 35 yards — while hanging out in the right flat.

"I was more happy with the three touchdown receptions because they were in the beginning of the game," Kern said.

Sequoia (4-5, 3-1) picked off six passes. Jaymason Howard also had a pair of thefts. His first interception, at the start of the second period, set up Larios' 33-yard TD strike on the next play. Kevin Brijil and Jack Elgaaen had the other picks for Sequoia.

Howard gained 196 yards on 17 carries, scoring on runs of 66 and 2 yards.

For Woodside (3-5, 2-2) wideout Marco Parodi caught five passes from Ben Shepard for 81 yards, mostly on slant passes across the middle. Parodi had two carries for 34 yards, one a 29-yard gain on a double-reverse late in the game, though the ball got loose and Sequoia recovered.

"Sequoia outplayed us," Parodi said. "We could not get our offense going. They out-everythinged us."

Sequoia's defensive front was stingy, yielding just 90 yards rushing, 199 total yards for the game. Defensive tackles Aaron Melz and Puamau Tuiaki led the way.

"We were shutting them down in the box," Melz said. "The only thing they had were short passes."

"Across the board, offense made plays, defense made plays," Poulos said. "We had good play on special teams."

Before the game, Sequoia honored its 17 seniors.

"To have this kind of score on senior night is amazing," said Kern, who took a look at the scoreboard. "This meant a lot to the team. I love playing with all my brothers."

Rafael Gonzalez had a late interception for Woodside.

Sequoia battles Carlmont next week in the Terremere Trophy game, while Woodside finishes the season at Jefferson in a non-league contest.
