Redwood City will enter a transitional phase beginning on Monday as council members vote to install a new mayor and bid farewell to the outgoing mayor.
Diane Howard, mayor of Redwood City for the past two years, will soon pass on the torch to the possible incoming mayor, Giselle Hale, who as of Dec. 7, 2020, has served as vice mayor after then-vice mayor Shelly Masur's two-year term expired. Masur earlier that year had an unsuccessful run at the state senate.
Hale, having been elected in 2018, is the most senior member of the current council followed by Diana Reddy who was also elected in 2018. Reddy is next in the rotation and is up for vice mayor. Her appointment to vice mayor will also be considered at Monday's meeting.
Per the city charter, which was updated in 2019 to adopt the rotation policy, mayors are selected based on seniority. The public will have an opportunity to speak about the selection of mayor and vice mayor prior to the appointment. Members will then nominate someone for mayor. A vote will also take place and if no member receives the majority of the vote, a second vote will take place or the nomination will restart.
Prior to the vote, city council members will recognize Howard as outgoing mayor.
