Gov. Gavin Newsom this week appointed 63-year-old Donald M. O’Keefe of Redwood City as the new chief of law enforcement at the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, according to a news release

O’Keefe has been a U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of California at the U.S. Marshals Service since 2010. He was previously the police chief at the Half Moon Bay Police Department from 2007 to 2010. He was an integral part of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, having served 27 years in a variety of roles including, as a sheriff’s captain, deputy sheriff, a detective among others, the release said. 

He earned a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of San Francisco. O’Keefe is a member of the FBI National Academy and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).

This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $171,852. O’Keefe is a Democrat, according to a news release. 

O’Keefe is replacing outgoing Chief of Law Enforcement Mark Pazin who is retiring. Pazin worked for Cal OES since 2013.
