East Palo Alto police are investigating a Christmas Eve shooting that injured a Redwood City man who later died, police said.
On Friday at 11:33 p.m., officers responded to a Shotspotter activation in the 900 block of Beech Street, which is between Clarke Avenue and Brentwood Court.
Officers found a vehicle that had crashed through a fence and into the front porch of a home. Inside the vehicle was a 22-year-old man, who did not respond to officers and looked like he may be injured.
Police got the man out of the vehicle to give him first aid and noticed he appeared to be suffering from gunshot wounds.
In a news release issued Saturday, police said the man was transported to the hospital. On Wednesday morning, police Cmdr. David Carson clarified that the man was on life support.
East Palo Alto police have identified him as Hector Valencia Jr. of Redwood City.
The man's mother reached out to the Pulse to clarify that Valencia Jr. was pronounced legally dead on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2021. Valencia Jr., an organ donor, was taken off life support on Dec. 29, 2022, so that his organs could be harvested, his mother said.
Anyone who has information related to the shooting is asked to contact East Palo Alto police by calling Detective Aleyda Romero at 650-853-7249. Anonymous tips can also be made by text or voicemail at 650-409-6792 or email to epa@tipnow.org.
Editor's Note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the date Valencia Jr. died. He was pronounced legally dead on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2021, and taken off life support on Dec. 29, 2022.
