A 28-year-old Redwood City man died overnight following a major collision late Sunday that shut down northbound and southbound lanes of El Camino Real at Claremont Avenue, according to the San Mateo County Coroner's Office.

According to the Redwood City Police, the man was riding a motorcycle at the time of the collision and is believed to have collided with a pole and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. However, the cause of the collision is still under investigation, said Redwood City Police Capt. John Gunderson.

The man has been identified as Eric McRae of Redwood City, according to the coroner's office.

The roadway had been closed shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday. Police tweeted at 12:50 a.m. Monday that both northbound and southbound lanes had reopened.  No further information was provided.
