Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Good morning, Redwood City!

I'm happy to finally share our story about the incredible Black History Month exhibit that's taken up temporary residence in Redwood City.

Created and put on by Carolyn Hoskins, wife of the late 49ers player Bob Hoskins, the museum was created in response to a question her grandson asked her 25 years ago. “Granny, aren’t there any other Black people that did anything besides Martin Luther King Jr.?” he asked her.

Since then, Hoskins has made it her life's work to build a space where kids and adults alike can come a learn something new about the history and culture of Black America. And true to her word, her collection is filled with odd and surprising, heartbreaking and nostalgic objects—all of which are currently on display at 890 Jefferson Ave. in Redwood City.

You can read more (and check out some pictures) about the exhibit here. It's open to visitors every day except Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. through February 27. A $5 donation is requested, and masks are required.

We've also got a new story from the history files for you. Did you know that a previously undiscovered creek helped create Redwood City's 1850's booming lumber industry, which literally helped build the Bay Area?

And don't forget to stop by Courthouse Square tomorrow to join in the Lunar New Year celebrations. More on the event here, which includes everything from lion dancers to taiko drummers to arts and crafts for the kids.

Signing off,

Leah
