Good morning, Redwood City!
Some good news for our local Black History Month exhibit…
If you didn't have a chance to stop by to admire Carolyn Hoskins' incredible collection of photos, household appliances, movie posters, sports jerseys and other memorabilia, it's not too late!
I just got word that the Domini Hoskins Black History Museum & Learning Center has been extended through the end of March. The exhibit, which is temporarily housed at 890 Jefferson Avenue, is open Tuesday-Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hoskins, who wants to give everyone a peek into the rich history of Black America, started the collection in response to a question her grandson asked her 25 years ago.
“Granny, aren’t there any other Black people that did anything besides Martin Luther King Jr.?” he asked her. The answer to that question, says Hoskins, "is 22,000 square feet of Black history.”
Hoskins was recently honored with a Jefferson Award for Public Service. You can read more about her museum here.
More time to read
For the first time since before the start of the pandemic, most libraries in the County are adding Sunday hours, marking a return to library service every day of the week.
North Fair Oaks Library is one of the libraries whose Sunday hours will start this weekend. The new hours will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mon-Thurs and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fri-Sun. Stop by to pick up a book or two!
Dusting off some 19th century crime
Don't miss our weekly pick from the crime files! Today blogger Douglas MacGowan writes about early criminal reporting from the San Mateo Leader, a newspaper founded in May of 1889.
Happy Thursday!
Signing off,
Leah
