Good morning, Redwood City!

Housing is heating up

Last night the City Council held a long, very detailed study session on the draft Housing Element, including goals, policies and housing sites.

Following presentations from city housing and planning officials, the council discussed the draft extensively, raising questions around equitable distribution of affordable housing, density limits, historic houses and environmental justice. Members of the public spoke as well, voicing concerns around meeting the needs of differently abled residents and providing low income families better access to public transportation.

“I’m so very excited about what was presented this evening. For me, what I see is that this is really a floor and not a ceiling," said Mayor Giselle Hale. "And what I know to be true about Redwood City and about our staff is that we’re going to continually innovate…to meet the housing needs of our community.”

(Members of the public are invited to submit feedback on the draft through Friday, March 25.)

A walk through the wildflowers

Spring has sprung, and so have the wildflowers! In fact, this past weekend I made a trek over to Filoli to check out their thousands tulip and daffodil blooms.

But you don't have to leave Redwood City to catch some of the season's abundance: Stop by Edgewood Park to see some purple coyote mint—and, if you're lucky, some monarch butterflies. Or wander over to Russian Ridge for 360-views and grasslands filled with sun-loving wildflowers. You can peruse the full list of local hikes here.

Happy Tuesday!
