Class resumed at KIPP Excelencia Community Prep in North Fair Oaks, but nearly 200 people are still without power following an electrical fire that broke near the school Monday morning.

Students at the public charter school at 2950 Fair Oaks Ave. were asked to shelter in place when smoke from the blaze caught the attention of school officials, according to the Redwood City Fire Department.

Around 10:30 a.m., firefighters arrived on the scene where several secondary power lines and a pole had caught fire across the street from the school’s main office, said Redwood City Deputy Chief Greg DaCunha. Flaming insulation dripped into the bushes below, causing vegetation and rubbish to catch fire as well, he added.

While initial reports suggested possible evacuations, DaCunha said that students were only asked to shelter in place until the fire was contained. Firefighters were able to get the fire fully under control within roughly 20 minutes, he said, adding that “there was no real risk to the school.”

The fire damaged electrical power poles and lines. No injuries were reported, and school was back in session shortly after.

According to a PG&E outage map, about 193 customers are currently affected by a power outage in the area surrounding the school. PG&E is investigating the outage and estimates that power will be restored by 11 p.m. Monday night.
