The Redwood City Police Department will have additional officers out on patrol this Cinco de Mayo in anticipation of motorists who drink and drive, the city said in a news release.
“We understand the celebratory nature of this day for many people, but it’s not an excuse to drink and drive,” Redwood City Police Department Chief of Police Dan Mulholland said in a statement. “There are many options to get home safely that don’t involve you driving.”
The department said it is encouraging residents to plan ahead and use public transportation, ride-share options or a designated driver. Officers will be stopping drivers suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
A “DUI doesn’t just mean alcohol,” the department said in its release.
Funding for Cinco de Mayo DUI enforcement is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Cinco de Mayo this year falls on a Thursday and celebrates the Mexican victory over the French in the town of Puebla.
