A 56-year-old transient was arrested in Redwood City last week in connection to the death of a San Mateo man who was found stabbed to death at a SamTrans bus stop on May 14, according to San Mateo police. The San Mateo and Redwood City police departments on May 16 located the suspect identified as Ricardo Bibbs, a parolee-at-large, after they said Bibbs allegedly stabbed 48-year-old Tedrick Towns at a SamTrans bus stop in the early morning hours of May 14.

Police believe that the two men knew each other and the stabbing was “not a random attack.”

According to police, sometime after 1:40 a.m., Bibbs and Towns had an argument at the bus stop, which resulted in the suspect stabbing Towns. Several hours later, a person waiting for the bus saw Towns and called for emergency assistance.

On Saturday, May 14, at approximately 6:48 a.m., SMPD patrol officers were dispatched to the SamTrans bus stop at 11 West Hillsdale Boulevard where a man was reportedly slumped over a bench. When officers arrived, they found Towns unresponsive with a pool of blood underneath him, police said. He was pronounced dead on scene, according to an official report.

Charges have been filed against Bibbs for murder with an enhancement allegation for use of a knife and one count of assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury, according to San Mateo County District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe. He is set to appear in court on Monday, Wagstaffe said. Bibbs was found to have an outstanding warrant and had failed to register as a sex offender. He has two prior convictions for stabbing a person at a bus stop in 2020 and another person in a vehicle in 2013.The investigation is ongoing, and SMPD encourage anyone who was driving in the area, has an in-car camera or may have seen something out of the ordinary to contact the police immediately at (650) 522-7700.
