The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors has designated this Friday as National Gun Violence Awareness Day and it will also be known as "Wear Orange Day."

“As has been tragically underscored by the recent massacres in Buffalo and Uvalde, Texas, gun violence sadly remains prevalent in our society. Though frustrated by the lack of comprehensive national action to control guns, San Mateo County can act locally to reduce gun violence,” said Supervisor Dave Pine.

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors have recently funded a series of gun buy back events, and supported funding to ensure prohibited persons are unable to possess firearms.

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors has joined other communities around the country in raising awareness around gun violence by honoring this day.

In 2013, Hadiya Pendleton, was tragically shot and killed in Chicago at the age of 15. National Gun Violence Awareness Day was started by her friends and orange was chosen as the color to wear in her honor. Orange has now become the defining color of the gun violence prevention movement. In the United States, 100 Americans are killed by gun violence every day.
