Two seats on the Redwood City School District Board of Trustees will be up for grabs this fall during this year’s school board election.

Current Board President Maria Diaz-Slocum and Vice President Cecilia Márquez will complete their terms in November, opening spots for new members in Trustee Areas 2 and 5. The remaining trustees, Alisa MacAvoy (Area 1), Janet Lawson (Area 3) and Mike Wells (Area 4), will continue to serve until their terms expire in November 2024.

Candidates for trustee positions must be United States citizens, registered voters over the age of 18 and residents of Redwood City in the Trustee Area they wish to represent. School district employees are eligible to run, but their employment will be terminated if elected, upon being sworn into office. Barring early resignation, all trustees serve 4-year terms.

Trustees should explain to spend a minimum of 10 hours per week, according to an informational page managed by Parents for Redwood City Students. Responsibilities include preparing for and attending Wednesday night board meetings and staying up-to-date with education news, committee meetings, staff and superintendent meetings and other events. Other commitments, including site visits, ceremonies or urgent issues, may also arise.

Trustees receive minimal compensation for their service and are permitted to hold full-time jobs while serving on the board, as do 3 of the 5 current members.

Some important dates and details:

  • June-July: The San Mateo County website will publish the 2022 Candidate Guide with details about how to become a candidate for the trustee seat.
  • July 11-15: The county will host a 1-1.5 hour “Candidate Seminar,” an open training session for prospective candidates, followed by a “Voter Data Seminar.”
  • July 18-August 12: The nomination window for school board will be open (with the possibility of a 5-day extension), and all prospective candidates must fill out the necessary paperwork to register with the county elections office during that time. Candidates can also withdraw from the election anytime before the window closes.
  • August 12-22: All submitted documents will be reviewed and made available for public examination.
  • August-November: Candidates will run their campaigns, following the rules outlined by the California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) to report donations and expenditures. More information is available on the county website and the FPPC Candidate toolkit.
  • November 8: All registered voters in Area 2 and 5 will cast their ballots on Tuesday, Nov. 8. Votes will be counted, and the county Electoral Officers will certify the results by December.
