Good morning, Redwood City!

In the wake of Roe

This morning the U.S. Supreme Court made a historic decision to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade, ending guaranteed access to abortion. Thirteen "trigger law" states already have anti-abortion laws that would go into effect immediately.

The decision comes less than two months after a leaked draft opinion sent shockwaves through the nation, prompting many local leaders to double down on their commitment to protecting legal abortions in California. Anticipating that California may become an “abortion sanctuary state,” the Redwood City council has thrown its support behind creating a protective buffer zone around a local Planned Parenthood. Meanwhile, the San Mateo County supervisors recently allocated $1 million to support women's reproductive rights.

Mayor Giselle Hale tweeted her reaction to the morning's news, saying: “My daughter turns 6 today. The Supreme Court just ensured she will have fewer choices in her life than I have had in mine.” More on this to come.

Tomorrow

The Parks & Rec Department wants to hear from you! All residents are invited to a walking tour and trail design workshop for the Redwood Creek Loop, a new one-mile pedestrian and bike trail along the edge of Redwood Creek. Activities start tomorrow at 10 a.m. More details here.

And don’t forget to visit me at the Kiwanis Farmers Market between 8 a.m.-12 p.m. tomorrow! Bring your feedback, questions, ideas and reusable bags.

Stay cool, and happy Friday.

Your reporter,

Leah
