Celebrating America?
I think it's safe to say that Redwood City's great July 4th return was a success. Pancakes were flipped, faces were painted, streets were paraded and fireworks were seen bursting over the water. The party-goers were a diverse group of lifelong Bay Area residents, new transplants, local officials and everyone in between.
Still, some wondered about the optics of a holiday celebrating 'American exceptionalism' in the wake of another mass shooting and with reproductive and other rights at stake.
As Mayor Giselle Hale wrote: “It was great to be back at the fire station for breakfast, followed by the return of our beloved parade…And yet, it is another tough year to feel truly independent as rights are taken and lives are lost.”
