The city of Redwood City will begin crediting the accounts of some residents who are 90 days or more behind in paying their utility accounts to prevent possible penalties or shutoffs due to pandemic-related debt.
The city has put $1.5 million into this initiative and will provide one-time funding assistance to utility customers who are struggling to make payments. Qualifying accounts will automatically receive the credit, and there is no need to apply. Those who are 90 days or more behind in payments as of June 15 may qualify.
“Under the City’s program, we will simply credit the accounts of those who were unable to stay current with their utility bills due to the pandemic, including many small businesses. We also are aiding customers with documented financial hardship who have continued to pay their utility bills during the pandemic," City Manager Melissa Stevenson Diaz said in a statement.
The city said it would also dole out credits to customers who are current on their utility payments and who are enrolled in the city's Water and Sewer Rate Assistance Program (WSRAP), which is based on an applicant's gross household income.
