Redwood City on Friday announced it had partnered with Bird – a micromobility transportation company based out of Miami – to provide residents with shared electric scooters.

In a statement, City Manager Melissa Stevenson Diaz said that this new partnership with Bird is a positive step for the city, not only in terms of making it more environmentally sustainable but also in providing the citizens of Redwood City with a leisurely alternative for moving around and enjoying everything the city has to offer.

“We welcome Bird to Redwood City, and look forward to offering community members a new, eco-friendly and fun way to get around. Whether shopping and dining downtown, or just taking a ride to the library or a park, residents and visitors will now have a new way to get there,” Diaz said.

The decision comes after the city last year amended its municipal code, renaming Chapter 8 from “Bicycles” to “Micromobility Devices and Operations" to allow for operators to begin installing electric bikes and scooters.

In a statement, Austin Marshburn, Bird's head of city and university partnerships, said he was thrilled to see Redwood City utilizing more environmentally sustainable transportation alternatives.

Citizens that are interested in riding the new transportation options need to download Bird's mobile phone app and activate one of the available shared e-scooters through the app before riding.
