Kaia Eakin, a life-long resident in the Bay Area and a longtime community volunteer, has announced that she has decided to run for Redwood City Council in the newly-formed district 5.
Eakin was born in Redwood City and has lived in the Redwood Oaks neighborhood for 20 years.
“I am determined to ensure that Redwood City remains a vibrant community for residents of all ages and at all income levels,” said Eakin in a statement. “Redwood City faces numerous challenges, including a high cost of living, housing affordability, congestion, public safety, homelessness, and as your council member, I will work with residents, businesses and community members on creative and practical solutions to these challenges.”
Eakin currently works as an attorney, specializing in workers' compensation. Over the course of her legal career, she said she had represented several national nonprofit organizations. She said that these clients’ missions to serve the public inspired her to begin working directly for several local nonprofit organizations.
Eakin said she has also done work with social service organizations, Notre Dame de Namur University and Project READ, as well as worked as a fundraiser for the San Mateo County History Museum for the past six years.
District 5 includes the neighborhood of Redwood Oaks and a part of Palm Park.
The filing period began on July 18 and will end on Aug. 12. No other candidate has filed nomination papers to represent district 5 as of July 18.
The Pulse on Tuesday reached out to Eakin for comment about her announcement.
