Good morning, Redwood City!

¡Celebremos!

Feliz Mes de la Herencia Hispana!

What’s that? Today marks the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month, a nationally observed celebration of the contributions and achievements of the Latinx community.

Why now? Many countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Chile, and Mexico, celebrate their independence and other national holidays during this period.

Who’s celebrating? Millions of Americans. Locally, the Hispanic community comprises more than 35 percent of the population of Redwood City. In North Fair Oaks, colloquially known as “Little Michoacán,” 70 percent of residents are Hispanic.

Want to join? Stop by Courthouse Square this Sunday from 4-8 p.m. for Fiestas Patrias, an annual celebration of independence. There will be live music, food, arts & crafts and a traditional flag ceremony.
