The Historic Union Cemetery is teaming up with the Gaspar de Portola Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution to sell wreaths to lay on the graves of veterans.
The collaboration is part of the Wreaths Across America program, where various organization in the country host sponsorship drives to sell wreaths during the holiday season to place on the graves of veterans as a way to honor their service, said Margaret Coleman, local organizer.
"They all have interesting stories and have a huge place in our local history," she said. "They deserve to be remembered and honored."
The team's goal is to sell100 wreaths, and so far, they have sold nearly 70 wreaths. Anyone who wants to help, can purchase a wreath for $15 between now and the end of November. The wreaths will be placed on the graves by volunteers on Dec. 17. Those who want to sponsor a specific grave have the option to do so, Coleman said.
The Union Cemetery contains roughly 2,500 graves, but only a small number of them are veterans, Coleman said. The cemetery was active between 1859 through the early 1900s. Those buried in the Union Cemetery include "Redwood City and Woodside founding pioneers, like James Peace, Frank Boos, Judge George Buck, George Washington Tallman, Will Frisbee and Joel Mansfield," she said.
"In addition, we have the Grand Army of the Republic plot that holds our civil war veterans with our Soldier statue watching over them," she added.
