Happy Wednesday, Redwood City!
Good news
Kaiser and the union representing mental health therapists who work there have reached a tentative agreement after a months-long strike that began in August. The deal comes after the union rejected Kaiser's proposal last month, stating that the offer did not meet the union's requirements. This time it sounds like the deal might stick; Kaiser and the union credited the Sacramento mayor for helping to mediate negotiations. We'll know more in the coming days. More here.
Rabies
If you have visited the Palo Alto Baylands recently, you may have noticed signs along paths alerting hikers to the presence of a rabid bat that was found in the area last week. According to our sister site, the Palo Alto Weekly, a visitor to the Baylands found the bat on the ground. The bat later tested positive for rabies. Now animal control is warning visitors and others to be wary of bats, asking people not to touch sick wildlife. In San Mateo County, anyone who comes into contact with a bat or is bitten by an animal should contact San Mateo County Health and call the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA at 650-340-8200. Get your pets vaccinated! It's pretty easy to do in Redwood City.
Police Advisory Committee
It's been a week since the Police Advisory Committee held its first-ever town hall (story to come). Tonight, the committee plans to do a debrief on the town hall event to see what issues police can learn from what community members said. During the town hall, members and the public split into small groups to discuss various topics. None of the people asked knew about the mental health community wellness crisis line. People suggested that the city do more to get information out to the public regarding "existing services for the unhoused." Others felt that they did not feel safe. Residents also suggested that police receive crisis prevention training. For more on this topic, you can catch tonight's PAC meeting at 6 p.m.
More news to come.
