Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Good afternoon, Redwood City!

Welcome to the first ever afternoon edition of the Express.

Checks and balances

It’s been about six weeks since the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors voted to establish a committee exploring civilian oversight over the activity of the sheriff.

The group championing the effort, Fixin’ SMC, is advocating for an oversight body, as well as an inspector general with subpoena power over the sheriff’s office. The latter point is a bit more controversial, but the members of Fixin’ have found support among everyone from the North Fair Oaks Community Council to Rep. Jackie Speier.

This morning, the Board of Supervisors participated in a study session about potential civilian oversight models led by Supervisors Warren Slocum and Dave Pine. During the discussion, the board considered three options for how they might structure their oversight body, including having an inspector general, an inspector general with an advisory commission or an oversight board without an inspector general.

More details (and a public engagement process) on that to come. But if you just can't wait, you can check out the presentation documents here.

Happy November!

Your reporter,

Leah

P.S. Thanks to everyone for photos of all their incredible Halloween decorations. Enjoy this last one! 🎃👻
