With the holiday season quickly approaching, Redwood City has a variety of upcoming festive events to experience this month that will certainly get everyone into the holiday spirit.

Valota Road light show

Every night — at 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. — until Jan. 1, 2023, the Valota Road light show event will be showing off dazzling light displays that are choreographed to various music (which changes on a night-to-night basis).  

Attendees of the community event can come sit in Red Morton Park and enjoy the light show performances. The closest parking for guests is at the location of 1455 Madison Ave.

Free movie at the Senior Center

On Dec. 16, at 1:15 p.m., there will be a showing of the 2021 film Spencer at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center (VMSC). 

The film will be shown on the VMSC Theater's projection screen, and it will be free for everyone to attend. A snack bar will also be open prior to the film from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The screening of Spencer is a part of a free, weekly film event that the Senior Center puts on every Friday afternoon. To view which movie will be playing, click here.

Free art classes

Casa Circulo Cultural will be hosting a day of free art classes on Saturday, Dec. 17, from 2-3 p.m. and 3-4 p.m.

All artistic abilities are welcome to attend the classes, but space will be limited and it will be occurring on a first come first served basis.

The classes will be taking place in the Kindness Corner, which is located to the right of the main entrance.

Christmas Tale performance

On Saturday, Dec. 17, at 12 p.m. the Casa Circulo Cultural Youth Drama Group will be putting on a Christmas Tales performance.

Christmas Tales is a story about a girl named Penelope, who is trying to keep her younger siblings busy while her mother is wrapping presents in the next room.

The performance will be weaving a variety of classic holiday stories, but with hilarious twists.

Union Cemetery walking tours

On Saturday, Dec. 17 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., there will be free one-hour walking tours of Union Cemetery.

Attendees will get the opportunity to learn more about the early pioneers of Redwood City and San Mateo County.

Additionally, residents can come visit Union Cemetery anytime between Dec. 17 and the new year to view the assortment of wreaths that have been placed on veterans' graves. The wreaths were provided by the D.A.R. Wreaths Across America program.

Third annual Holly Jolly Home Decorating Contest

This week is the final week to enter the third annual Holly Jolly Home Decorating Contest.

Residents that would like to show off their bright lights and impressive holiday decoration displays have until Sunday, Dec. 18 at 11:59 p.m. to enter for the contest.

The contest is free to enter, and winners will be selected from three categories: Merry and Bright, Holiday Spirit, and Incredible Inflatables.

Prior to judging, a map will be posted so that residents can drive around and enjoy all of the displays.

13th annual Chanukah Festival

The 13th annual Chanukah Festival will be happening at the Courthouse Square on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 4:15 p.m.

At the event, attendees can watch graffiti artist Ankor create Norcal's first graffiti menorah. 

In addition, there will also be Chanukah arts and crafts, music, moon bounces, as well as delicious latkes and donuts to feast upon.

The event is free of charge to attend, and anyone who RSVPs ahead of time will be entered into a raffle for the chance to win an Amazon gift card.

Holiday camps

This month, there are a variety of different camps that are happening around Redwood City for children to participate in.

  • On Dec. 19-21, there will be the Basketball Camp with the National Academy of Athletics for anyone ages 7-12. Half-Day and Full-Day Camps are available. Click here for registration information.
  • On Dec. 19-21, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. there is the All Sports Holiday Camp with Yepsf for ages 5-13. Full-Day Camps are available. Click here to register.
  • From Dec. 19-23, the World Cup Soccer Camps and Clinics will be occurring for ages 5-13. Half-Day and Full-Day Camps are available. Click here to register.
  • From Dec. 19-23, the GrowFit Sports Camp will be taking place for age 4-12. The camp will have games and activities for children of all interests and ability levels. Click here to register.
  • On Dec. 19-21, the Play-Well TEKnologies Winter Wonderland Challenge with LEGO® Materials will be occurring for children ages 5-9. Kids will have the opportunity to use LEGO® pieces to build bobsleds, design snowmobiles, and much more. Click here to register.
