Sporting goods retailer Sports Basement has announced that it will be hosting a community blood drive along with the Stanford Blood Center on Friday, Jan. 6, 2023.

Redwood City residents with all blood types are welcome donate between 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.. There is always a particular need for donors with type O blood—or universal donors—according to the Stanford Blood Center.

“Blood donors are essential to the health and safety of our community. You never know when you or someone you know could need blood,“ said Clayton Toller, Stanford Blood Center account manager. “In critical situations, it’s the blood that has already been donated that saves lives at a moment’s notice…In just one hour, you could donate enough blood to help multiple patients at a time they need it most.”

Prior to their visit, donors are encouraged to eat well, drink lots of water to stay hydrated and ensure that they have their donor IDs upon arrival.

The Stanford Blood Center added that its main priority is the safety of the donors and that it will be implementing measures to ensure a safe process for everyone that is donating blood, which includes mandatory masking for all participants.

All donors will also be entered to win a two-night stay at a Ritz-Carlton destination of their choosing.

Because walk-in availability may be limited, interested donors are recommended to make an appointment ahead of time by visiting the Stanford Blood Center website or calling (888) 723-7831.
