Good morning, Redwood City!
We honor them
This month we pay tribute to the generations of Black lives who've triumphed over adversity. Last year, I was looking into sundown towns on the Peninsula, trying to understand a bit more about the historical context of the racial makeup of our city. Black residents make up roughly 2% of the population in Redwood City, according to information from the United States Census Bureau. What I learned is that shortly after World War II, a Black veteran by the name of John J. Walker had his Redwood City home burned down. And he and his wife received violent threats. It's not entirely clear to me exactly when and if Redwood City stopped being a sundown town or whether it was ever officially a sundown town. But if you want more information on sundown towns, here is a good resource.
If you're looking for more Black History, head over to the Domini Hoskins Black History Museum, which pops up this month between Feb. 3 and Feb. 28. Read our prior coverage on the Museum here.
