Happy Monday, Redwood City!

A modern police chief

The city has kickstarted its search for the next police chief following the announcement that current Redwood City Police Department Chief Dan Mulholland will retire this year after nearly 40 years with the department, five of those as chief. Finding a "perfect" candidate to fill Mulholland's role will be challenging. Mulholland has decades of institutional knowledge that only comes from living and working in the area. Recruiting and retaining law enforcement, especially talent of such high caliber, comes with its own set of challenges. The high cost of living in the area makes it hard for law enforcement to live where they work. The trust between police and the public has degraded throughout the country. Redwood City is not immune. We should ask ourselves who we want as the police chief.

On Saturday, a group of your neighbors banded together to listen to City Manager Melissa Stevenson Diaz and Teri Black, the headhunter hired by the city to recruit the new chief, give an update on the city's hiring efforts. But most of all, Stevenson Diaz said, the city wanted to hear residents' thoughts and input on what they wanted to see in the next chief; a chief who would lead 92 sworn officers and be responsible for an operating budget of $52 million, almost 32% of the city's overall operating budget.

So kind of important. More on that later.
