A Redwood City man found dead in his cell at North Kern State Prison last week is likely to have been killed by his cellmate, prison officials announced late last week.
Ariel Torres, 45, was found unresponsive on Wednesday, Feb. 8, around 9:08 p.m. by an officer during a security and welfare check. Torres was pronounced dead at 9:41 p.m. It's unclear how Torres died, but the Kern County Coroner will determine Torres’s official cause of death.
Torres shared a cell with 44-year-old Matthew Holverstott, who is in prison on a life sentence for the second-degree murder of an elderly person. Torres's death is being investigated as a homicide.
Holverstott has been segregated from the general prison population during the homicide investigation, according to prison officials.
Torres of Redwood City was imprisoned after being convicted on Nov. 30, 2022, to serve two years for possession of child pornography involving a minor.
