An elderly man was rushed to a hospital early Wednesday after the back bedrooms of a care home in Redwood City went up in flames, Redwood City fire officials said.

The man, who is about 70 years old, was suffering from life-threatening injuries when first responders found him in the home around 3 a.m. on Wednesday at the 500 block of Cypress Street in Redwood Oaks, said Redwood City Fire Department Battalion Chief Geoff Balton.

Two other care patients, who were not injured, were also taken to the hospital as a precaution, Balton said. In total, five people were in the home at the time of the fire, including two caregivers, he added.

Two of the bedrooms and the attic of the home were involved in the fire, he said.

It's unclear what started the fire, but firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze in roughly 20 minutes, Balton said.
