Good morning, Redwood City!

Tonight at a special council meeting, the city council will interview eight candidates vying to fill two partial seats for the planning commission with terms to expire in June 2024 and 2026, respectively. Those applicants include Noemi Alvarez, District 4; Margaret Becker, District 2; Shannon Chi, District 7; Tom Hernandez, District 5; Anthony Lazarus, District 7; Alexia Lopez, District 3; Jerome Madigan, District 6; and Nathalie Runcie, District 1. The meeting starts at 6 p.m.

It's Women's History Month, and we want to highlight some local women who have made a difference in our community. One woman who comes to mind is Alicia Aguirre, who made history as the first Latina mayor of Redwood City. Christina Corpus made history as the first Latina sheriff in San Mateo County. I also want to recognize Maria Diaz-Slocum, who spent nearly two decades on the Redwood City Board of Trustees. Diane Howard spent a lifetime of public service in Redwood City. Angelica Solorzano-Cuschieri puts love into every meal. Veronica Escamez deserves a medal for her dedication to low-income and underserved families. Many, many women deserve recognization. Please share them with me.

Speaking of extraordinary women, I want everyone to meet our new reporter, Avery Luke, who just started today. Avery comes to the Redwood City Pulse from KPFA Radio, a community-supported radio station based in Berkeley. Please introduce yourself and send her your story ideas at aluke@rwcpulse.com

Have a happy Monday,

Michelle
