The Redwood City Police Department has announced an enforcement operation targeting drivers suspected of violating the hands-free cell phone law.

The enforcement period will run through April 10. During this time, officers will identify motorists holding phones or electronic communication devices while driving. Current legislation prohibits drivers from talking, texting, or using apps on handheld devices while operating a vehicle. Violators face fines; a second offense within 36 months results in a point on their record.

Sgt. Richard Santiago of the RCPD Traffic Division emphasized the importance of staying focused on the road.

"A driver's focus should be on the road, not their phone," he said. "That text, phone call, email, or social media post is not worth the risk to yourself and other people on the road."

The Redwood City Police Department advises drivers to pull over to a safe parking spot if they need to make a phone call or program directions. Additionally, police recommend silencing phones or storing them out of reach before driving.
