Happy Thursday, Redwood City!
Earth Day is this Saturday, April 22. Looking for a family-friendly way to celebrate the environment with your community? There are a wide variety of local events happening this weekend.
Learn about caring for the planet and celebrate with the community:
"Love Our Earth Festival" at Menlo-Atherton High School. Learn more about the Menlo Park Safe Routes to School program, talk to experts about electrifying your home, make art, get inspiration to help tackle our climate crisis and preserve Earth’s ecosystems, donate clothes to Goodwill and more.
A hands-on science event:
Join Redwood City's Marine Science Institute for our Earth Day BioBlitz! During our celebration, we will identify as many Bay species as possible within our collection area and upload them to iNaturalist, an open-source database used by scientists and policymakers around the world.
Clean up the coast:
Every year, thousands of volunteers of all ages gear up with gloves and buckets to join the hands-on action at organized sites from Daly City to Half Moon Bay, on beaches and along highways and streets from highways to the coastline. Sign up to volunteer for the many Earth Day beach cleanups happening on the San Mateo Coast.
Clean up the Bayside:
A cleanup at Cooley Landing Park in East Palo Alto. Volunteers will also learn about the history of Cooley Landing, how contamination affects salt marsh habitat, and spend the rest of the morning picking up trash.
Rally for climate justice:
Bay Area students will “March and Rally for Our Earth” on Saturday, April 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. at King Plaza, in front of Palo Alto. Welcoming friends, families, and any community members.
See some wildflowers on the coast:
Celebrate Coastal Wildflower Day in Half Moon Bay at Francis Beach.
Attend a local film festival:
Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) and Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) co-host this festival showcasing environmental and adventure short films at Foothill College. Viewers can also learn more about the work of POST and Midpen.
Try some plant-forward dishes:
Check out the Earth Day Feast and Faire Valley Presbyterian Church's Earth Care Team hosts a food-focused event with a tasting menu of plant-forward dishes. Plus, information about sustainable appliances, such as induction cooktops, photovoltaic systems and heat pumps. Embarcadero Media blogger Sherry Listgarten speaks at 10:45 a.m. during the service preceding the faire.
Catch a local show at the library:
Mitchell Park Library in Palo Alto welcomes singer-writer Nellie McKay for a performance this Sunday, April 23 at 7 p.m. Karla Kane opens. Get your tickets here!
